

Yeah, the NPC statblocks frequently have more HP and earlier innate casting than the PC races. The Eberron lore is pretty specific, but the statblocks are probably a good fit for any intelligent animal companion.Ĭhangeling, Drow, Deep Gnome, Orc, Satyr, etc. They can form a telepathic bond with a single creature, meaning they're basically tailor-made as an animal sidekick.

Valenar Beasts - These combine the physical attributes of a beast with intelligence and language comprehension. 60 foot fly speed, large enough to ride, good skills/senses, and smart enough to understand complex instructions. Thug - If you just want a powerful martial sidekick, the Thug is hard to beat. Take your pick of some combination of a fly speed, pack tactics, and keen senses. In the case of Gaw the Cockatrice, he has a +2 to hit at 1st level so at 8th level he’ll have a +3 to hit. Proficiencies for your sidekick begin with a +2 according to the advancement charts for each sidekick. Sidekick proficiencies also increase along side the party. Using the average of 4 hit points per HD and the Constitution bonus of +1, Gaw the Cockatrice sidekick will have 63 total hit points at 8th level.

The APL of The Heroes of Starsong Tower is 8, so Gaw adds 7 more d6s (it’s HD and Con bonus too) to gain more hit points to be really hardy for adventuring.

Levelling up a sidekick is as easy as consulting the sidekick class advancement chart and adding more Hit Dice (HD). A 1st level sidekick has all the statistics outlined in it’s stat block, including special attacks (like the cockatrice’s petrifying bite). The starting level of the side kick is equal to the Average Party Level (APL) of the adventuring party.
